MELCOM REVIEWS

    It's a good start
I was pleasantly surprised that the software does much of what it claims to. The documentation appears to be complete and is supplied as a set of HTML files and images. The same documentation is available at the developer's home site, www.pro.com.eg, with additional downloadable example files. That said, I found that the MIDI files output by MelCom only play in the default instrument, Acoustic Grand Piano, when I test the files with Winamp or Microsoft Media Player, regardless of which instrument I set in the source file. (MelCom does use the correct selected instrument when playing the source file in preview mode, and also has a handy "force instrument" override to use a different instrument from that selected in the code.) The screen editor in MelCom could use a few more features, such as "Home" key implementation to get the cursor to the top of the window quickly, looping on a highlighted area of code when playing, and ability to set a preferred file directory. Also, MelCom doesn't accept a file name as a startup parameter, so it can't be set up to start automatically and begin editing a .mlc file when one double-clicks on an icon.
